Kurtle's Journal

08:56 pm

All things considered, I'm doing OK right now. I'm back home in western Mass, on my own, and I've gotten some good time to be alone and grieve. My apartment is getting closer to looking like it can support human life (for the last few weeks, I've either been out of town or out of energy from all the stuff going on with my mom's illness - now that I'm back, I'm going to fold the laundry I washed over two weeks ago, wash the dirty clothes that have been piling up on the bedroom floor and in suitcases, wash and put away the dishes that have been getting used to a quiet life in the kitchen sink, read the mail that's been piling up unopened for weeks...), and I've been mostly OK on my own. Crying some, but not too much, thinking about my mom a lot, but not 24-7. I actually slept last night for almost 9 hours. Wrote a couple of thank-you notes tonight. Mentally checked out with a couple of DVDs (although in one of them, a character died in a hospital bed, and the docs had to get the defibrillator paddles out, and I had a tough time there). Even got a little work done from home (not early enough to meet the deadline, but I think the court will be understanding).

Please keep praying for my family and me. I'm doing OK, but this is still really hard.

09:22 pm - My Pad

I moved into my apartment at the end of August, took some pictures for a few weeks, then never got around to posting them. So if you want to see what my apartment looked like a couple of months ago, here's your chance. The tour )

09:06 pm - Food Pictures

In yet another vain attempt to be more like my friend Ethan, I cooked tonight and then took some pictures of the food. Here are the pics )

10:43 pm

My family has this green bean recipe that's amazing. We make it for Thanksgiving and Christmas every year, and even though it looks like a vegetable, it's probably the least healthy item in the meal. It takes two days to make - one day, you cook everything, then you have to let it marinate overnight in the fridge. I decided I'd make some for Christmas this year, so I got started this afternoon. And promptly burned the beans. Didn't stir enough and had the heat too high, I guess. No problem, though, I decided I'd just go to church tonight and then hit a grocery store on the way home.

Unfortunately, people at church warned me that all the stores were already closed. Where was I possibly going to get four cans of green benas to replace the ones I had burned?

Fortunately, the church had a canned food drive a couple of weeks ago... And I saw the table where we had displayed our collected items... And those items included four cans of green beans...

So yes, I stole canned goods from the hungry on Christmas Eve. I'll replace them in a week or so, but yes, I walked out of the church with my jacket pockets full of green bean cans. At least I didn't burn this set.

This would be so much fun, but I don't know how often I'd be able to convince someone to play with me...

09:24 am - I Think I Achieved a Goal This Week

On Thursday, I was in the courthouse talking with a defendant's mother. Mostly, I just listened and let her talk. As I walked off after one of our conversations, though, I heard her tell someone with her, "That lawyer? He's young, but he's classy!" Yes! I'm finally classy!

09:21 am - Christmas Music

My friend Justin has released an EP of Christmas songs, titled, appropriately enough, Christmas Songs. I just went over to iTunes and bought it this morning, and I think those of y'all with $2.97 to spare should do the same.

10:34 pm - My Clients Are Funny

I was in the jail today meeting with some clients, and on my way out, I just happened to be standing next to someone I represented a few weeks ago. I greeted him, and he happily returned the greeting. Then he nudged the guy next to him and said, "This is my lawyer! See - I told you he was just a little kid!" Hee!

10:13 am - Crystal Beach

I'm just now getting around to taking pictures off my camera that have been there for months. Like this one. This is what the beach looked like just after sunrise one day in August when I was crashing at my family's beach house.

06:25 pm

I was supposed to get my bar exam results today. The new prosecutor had his waiting in the mailbox when he went home for lunch. But me? Nope. I know I mailed in the change of address form by the deadline... Did I send it to the right place? Did I remember to put a stamp? This is a little troubling.

While I'm thinking about my job, though, I'll share a couple of stories. I've been at this for about five weeks now, at least in the sense of finishing the formal training and picking up my own cases. My first week, I picked up two cases. Then three (total: 5). Then another three (total: 8). Last week I got four (total: 12). Today, I got 12. Twelve cases. For me. Just today. I mean, I got to do pleas for two of the old cases and two of the new ones, but that still means that of my 20 open cases, 10 were not mine when I woke up this morning. Yikes.

Near the end of the day, a client told me, "I'm about to go away for six months and you just mentioned Legally Blonde?" Because.. well.. I did. It's the easiest way to explain how I'm not really a lawyer but I do lawyery stuff. On the same subject of "you mean you're not a real lawyer?" someone told me, "You're killin' me... It's a good thing you're so cute. I thought you were this cute little lawyer, but.. you're not even a lawyer?" (not flirtatious, cute is in the sense of "what a cute kid")

07:33 am - Bar Exam

I had heard a rumor that the bar exam results were going to be posted online yesterday, so I checked a few times that morning without success. In the early afternoon, I finally called the board of bar examiners in Boston to check the rumor with them. Here's the conversation:

[ring ring!]
Her: Board of bar examiners. (I think - I don't remember her exact introduction, but that's basically it.)
Me: Hi, I've heard a rumor that -
Her: Results went out in the mail this morning. The website will be updated by Monday. [CLICK]

So I guess they're fielding a lot of calls... And it's going to be a long walk to the mailbox this afternoon...

07:59 pm - Was It Something I Said?

Last night I got really excited about Halloween. Wandered through Target picking up a big bag of Dum Dums and splurging on a 30-pack of regular-size candy bars (100 Grand, Baby Ruth, Butterfinger, Crunch, Crunch Caramel). Raced home from work today to greet the early kids. And a couple of minutes before 6:00, I got my first knock at the door. I bounded over to it, offering up the pretty salad bowl I inherited from my parents, letting the kids grab as many suckers as they wanted.

Since then, not one knock. Not one. I thought things were going to be hopping all night because, hey, I live in an apartment complex. High population density. But no. I guess it's different when you live in a spot where maybe all the kids should be dressed as soldiers if they want to make it through with all their limbs intact... Sad. Maybe I'll do some reverse trick-or-treating and bring a bunch of candy to the little kids on my hall.

09:22 pm - Board Games

My brother bought a few board games recently, and he sent me his reviews. I honestly had no intention - ever - of buying these games before his reviews, but I'm now trying to give this PSA to better inform those who may actually be thinking about it... Here are the games. )

06:47 pm - That's Just How I Roll

The CFCF college group's retreat was last weekend at Mt. Monadnock, and I tagged along. On Saturday afternoon, we had a lot of free time, and I spotted a long, steep, grassy hill. Since there had been a lot of rain the night before, the ground was nice and soft. And.. sometimes I'm still five years old. I did somersaults all the way down. Nine or ten times. Even though I was hitting my head a lot. Even though my neck was hurting a lot. Even after I started slurring my speech a little. It was a great time.

And I'm still hurting. Sore ribs, sore abs, all that stuff. Yesterday I couldn't even sneeze - I'd get close, but then I couldn't get my stomach muscles to contract enough to finish the sneeze. It was sad. Today I'm almost all better - laughing still hurts, which means I definitely shouldn't be watching my new Thundercats DVDs (I got volume 2 of season 1 in the mail yesterday, and it's every bit as hilariously awful as I had hoped). But yeah, I'm not as young as I used to be, I guess.

(I'd do it again if I had the chance, though. I may be old, but I'm not wise.)

08:20 am

Last night, I dreamed that I went on Napster and bought a version of Breathe by Watermark. When I tried to listen to it on my iPod, though, I discovered to my surprise that the track had been mislabeled, and Napster had actually sold me Van Halen's Jump instead. Considering that I already have two or three versions of Breathe and I don't even really like it all that much, I think this deal worked out in my favor.

07:42 pm - Boo, Internet Explorer...

So for the last few weeks, I've been trying to blog, or edit old blog posts, or whatever, but Livejournal isn't playing nicely with Netscape. Every time I try to open the page that lets me edit, the whole browser closes. So now I'm stuck doing it on Internet Explorer. Not happy.

10:12 pm

I was talking with someone at the courthouse today (not a client). He's from a different country, and we were chatting about random stuff while we waited for my co-workers to finish their official law business with his friend so everyone could go home for the day. And at one point, the subject turned to clubs, and he said, "Do you like to go to the clubs?" (imagine a strong accent here, Eastern European)

"Oh, no, I'm really boring."

"Oh. So you are Christian?"

(I did answer affirmatively without elaborating that the one doesn't really have anything to do with the other, and from there we had a good conversation about Jesus, but yeah, that quick dialogue clip made me laugh when I thought about it afterwards)
